Well, it's taken a while, but we're finally live!
A big thank you to those of you who have seen us at several exhibitions now and been patiently waiting on our website through all the times we said "it'll be live in a couple of weeks!"
To those of you who have found us for the first time through this website, welcome! I hope you find something here that interests you.
Welcome to NER models, where passion for British railway history comes to life through 3D printed kits. We specialise in Eras 1 through 3, focusing on the evolution of the North Eastern Railway (NER) from its consituent companies through to the formation of the London and North Eastern Railway (LNER).
Located in the North East of England, we aim to offer an authentic selection of wagons, carriages, railway buildings and accessories that capture the essence of this unique period.
Our wagon kits are made from a mix of grey, black or coloured ABS-Like resin (the wagon/van top) and black PETG plastic chassis. Detailing parts such as axels and brakes are generally printed in black ABS-Like resin.
Our OO gauge buildings tend to be mainly PLA plastic, as that has the best range of colours, including the textured brick effect!
PLA, while described as biodegradable/compostable, requires industrial type heated composters before it breaks down. Many people in 3D-printing communities have shown how their PLA prints have remained structurally sound even after years in their gardens! However, I'd recommend keeping them indoors and not exposing them to extremes of temperatures!
No. The plastic and resin colours have been chosen so that, once built, you can either leave them unpainted or add some weathering powder/oils to your liking. I'd always recommend a UV-resistant clear coating, however, to protect the plastic over time from sunlight and general wear and tear. Daler Rowney do a Colourless Fixative Spray with Anti-UV Protection, which works well and leaves an invisible protective film.
But if the only reason you're not painting your models is because you're scared your skills don't match up with those of Michelangelo, we say stop worrying and just give it a go! You'll be surprised how good even a simple coat of paint, maybe with some simple dry-brushing and/or weathering powders can look.
Currently we only offer OO gauge as standard, just because this shop is currently a secondary job and the designs have been created with the most popular gauge in mind to build sales, and reinvest in the business as quickly as possible. Most of you will be aware that converting from OO gauge to N or O (or others) isn't a simple case of resizing the model and pressing print, as OO gauge has a strange, non-prototypically scaled track and wheel spacing. Buildings are simpler, but we just haven't got around to testing them at different scales yet (but we believe anything larger than OO will look very good as printed plastic kits, and anything smaller than OO will need to be printed as a whole item in resin). We intend to slowly convert all our current range of wagons to other scales slowly, but if you just can't wait, get in touch and we'll see what we can do!
Most kits are produced to order. Due to the number of different parts made in different ways for some of the kits, it can take several days for us to get all the parts printed, after which we want to make sure they're all in good condition before sending them out. While we try to print the smaller parts in batches, so that we have spares to add to kits quickly, we can't necessarily do that with all the parts. Added to that, this is still very much a second job (for now!) so printing and quality assurance all takes place in our limited spare time. For those reasons, please allow up to four weeks before expecting to receive your order, however we hope to have them dispatched long before that.
If you absolutely must have your order sooner, please get in touch and we'll see what we can do.
